The Lorain High wrestling program has started open mats and weight training. Over 50 young men participated in at an open mat early this week. It is the first step as the young men seek to be the first wrestlers from the new Lorain High to advance to the state tournament the first weekend of March.

For those seeking to make the trip to Columbus, they won’t have to travel far to get there as Lorain High has been selected to host both the D-I sectional and district wrestling tournament in 2011. Southview has hosted the sectional tournament for several years but now Titan wrestlers will have the advantage of home cooking for both meets that lead to the state tournament.

“It is great for the city of Lorain and the program,” Lorain head wrestling coach Billy Kopp said. “We are coming together as the new Lorain High and now to have the districts in our hometown is huge.”

The sectional tournament will be held between Feb. 14-19 with the district tournament to take place the following week.
