BOYS GOLF: Avon Lake finishes 12th at state
Their goal of finishing better than the 2005 state qualifying team didn't come true as the Avon Lake Shoremen finished in last place with a two-day total of 695.
Leading the team was sophomore Brendan Aussem, who shot a two-day total 165. Following Aussem was senior Collin Holmes with a two-day total of 167. Aussem finished in 35th place overall indivudally with Holmes finished in 37th place.
Aussem has led the Shoremen all season long, maintaining a team-best 76.375 average in 18-hole format competitions. He led the team at the Southwestern Conference Tournament with a 74, a 76 at Thunderbird Hills Golf Course during sectionals and a 74 at districts. The team qualified for state with a 314 at the district tournament behind Ashland’s 298.
Holmes maintained a 78 average in 18-hole formats and a team-best 36.375 nine-hole average throughout the season. Junior Andrew Lombardi has been contributing behind Aussem with solid scores as well, posting a 77 at districts and a 79 at sectionals.
The road to state was an impressive one for Avon Lake as it dominated all its dual matches and won five 18-hole competitions — The SWC preview and postseason contests and the Comet, North Olmsted and Port Clinton invitationals leading up to sectional and district play.
